WhatsApp tried to clear the air about its updated privacy policy after reports of mandatory data sharing with Facebook drove users to Signal and Telegram in troves.
Since most people are used to click the button “I agree” every time a license agreement appears, the news of the pending changes in WhatsApp’s privacy policy, made people fear for their personal information. WhatsApp informed their users that all their data would be shared with Facebook, and left everyone two options: agree or leave. And people really left, Signal and Telegram getting a huge increase in downloads and usage.
In an attempt to mitigate the situation, Whatsapp, which is owned by Facebook, tried to clarify the updated policy: the data sharing only applies to users who message businesses on the platform, for example getting technical support. WhatsApp also claimed that private messages or calls are not affected, as they’re end-to-end encrypted and cannot be accessed. Also, the “location information” can be collected or be publicly available only with the user’s permission.
